Coruscant
Overview
At the center of the Galactic Republic lies Coruscant. Located in the Core Worlds, this planet is the primary hub for galactic governance, diplomacy, economics, and administrative coordination for the Republic. For years it has functioned as the seat of the Republic institutions, and it remains the most politically significant world in the galaxy.
An ecumenopolis, a planet that is one unbroken city. No forests, no deserts, no open plains. Everything on the surface is covered in buildings, transit systems, and infrastructure. City streets stack on top of each other in layers that descend thousands of meters below the surface. From orbit, the planet isn't natural. A massive living machine that never sleeps and never stops.
Senator Varkis Drayce has represented Coruscant in the Galactic Senate since 961 RSY. Carrying centuries of political legacy, a decorated career in the Republic Navy, Drayce entered the Senate and quickly established himself as one of the most fearful voices within those halls. His vision for a stronger, more centralized, militarized Republic, has shaped Coruscant political identity and drawn both fierce supporters and fierce opposition
Society and Culture
The divide between upper and lower levels is not just physical, it defines every aspect of life for the planet's population.
The upper levels are home to noble houses, government officials, military commanders, and the Republic's commercial elite. The Drayce family represents the model of upper-level Coruscant: old money, deep institutional connections, military tradition, and political influence that spread for generations. Culture at this level is formal, competitive, and consumed by the business of governance. The Senate and its surrounding institutions dominate social life.
The lower levels tell a different story. Poverty, overcrowding, and limited access to basic resources define life for much of Coruscant's population. Many lower-level residents work in industrial facilities or sell goods through informal markets. Meeting basic needs is a daily struggle despite the extraordinary wealth generated by the planet above them. Crime rates in the lower levels are high, driven by poverty and the lack of legitimate economic opportunity. Theft, smuggling, robbery, and illegal trade are common. The Coruscant Guard maintains a presence across both levels, though its effectiveness in the lower levels remains a persistent point of public debate.
Government
Coruscant operates as the political center of the Galactic Republic under a constitutional framework. The Supreme Chancellor serves as Head of State, responsible for overseeing Republic governance and acting as the highest executive authority for both the planet and the Republic as a whole. The Galactic Senate functions as the primary legislative body, composed of representatives from member systems across the galaxy.
Following the assassination of Chancellor Volken during a public address, Mas Amedda took the oath of office as Supreme Chancellor. Amedda's tenure began under difficult circumstances and has been defined by efforts to stabilize Republic governance amid rising external threats and deepening internal tensions. He received emergency powers to act beyond standard limits in the interest of protecting the Republic and its citizens. Those powers still remain in effect.
During the transition period following Volken's death, Senator Varkis Drayce briefly held the position of Vice Chancellor before stepping down and returning to his Senatorial role. He stated his reason for stepping down was to engage more directly with the needs of Coruscant's citizens.
Military Significance
Coruscant is among the most strategically important planets in the Core Worlds. Its value is not purely military but extends to its political weight, its industrial output, and its function as the Republic's primary command hub. Military operations and intelligence networks that manage fleets and coordinate security across the galaxy run through Coruscant's institutions.
The planet is a major producer of starships, capital ships, vehicles, and ammunition. These facilities support both defensive and offensive Republic operations and make Coruscant a critical logistics node that any serious threat to the Republic would need to account for. Food production and distribution networks based on Coruscant supply both civilian populations and deployed forces across multiple sectors.
Coruscant maintains a permanent naval presence with fleets assigned to protect the Core Worlds and the Capital Sector. The Coruscant Guard enforces law and order across both levels of the planet and provides security for the Republic's government and institutions.
Notable Events
Coruscant has sat at the center of nearly every major political development in the Republic's recent history.
A formal meeting between CIS delegates and Republic senators produced the Confederacy's official withdrawal from the Republic, an event that took place on Coruscant and directly triggered the opening of the current conflict between the two powers.
The assassination of Chancellor Volken during a public speech shocked the planet and accelerated a political transition that reshuffled the Republic's leadership. Mas Amedda succeeded Volken and quickly moved to consolidate authority under emergency powers. Varkis Drayce rose briefly to Vice Chancellor before returning to the Senate.
During this period of instability, the Senate's capital building on Coruscant was bombed on multiple occasions. The attacks caused structural damage to sections of the building that required extensive repairs and left visible debris that remains scattered across parts of the complex in 981 RSY.
Notable Figures
Chancellor Volken
Served as Supreme Chancellor prior to his assassination. Little remains on public record about the full scope of his governance, but he was known for his efforts to make ordinary Coruscant citizens feel included in the Republic's political process.
Senator Varkis Drayce
Represents Coruscant in the Galactic Senate and is one of its most prominent and polarizing figures. A decorated former admiral and heir to one of Coruscant's oldest noble houses, Drayce advocates for a stronger, more militarized Republic and holds significant influence over the Senate's conservative faction. He briefly served as Vice Chancellor before returning to his Senatorial duties.
Supreme Chancellor Mas Amedda
Succeeded Chancellor Volken following his assassination and currently governs the Republic with emergency powers. His leadership focuses on stabilizing the Republic's institutions and responding to both the CIS conflict and growing internal tensions. His tenure has been marked by increased security measures across Coruscant, including additional fortification around the capital building.
